Concerned that decisions about abused and neglected
children’s lives were being made without sufficient information, a
Seattle judge conceived the idea in 1977 to use trained community volunteers to
speak in the best interest of these children in court. This Seattle
program was so successful that soon judges across the country began
utilizing volunteer citizen advocates. The National CASA
Association was organized in 1982 to support and train an increasing
number of program staff around the nation. More than 907 CASA
programs in 50 states with
more than 52,760 volunteers. CASA of Mesa County is the
first program in Western Colorado.
In Colorado, nine programs serve abused and neglected
children in various large and small communities. In Mesa County, CASA-MC
served more than 100 children in its first year of operation (1998). We
continue to increase the number of children served each month, and
actively recruit and train CASA volunteers year-round.
